Concert Review: Two Door Cinema Club 1.19.11

Recent recipients of a Certified Gold 2010 award stopped by Boston’s legendary Paradise Rock Club with tour mates Someone Still Loves You Borris Yeltzin and Tokyo Police Club. While we’d prefer not to comment on the other bands, something absolutely needs to be said about Two Door’s performance.

Two Door Cinema Club should be the band every touring band out there aspires to be. Opening for a (in our eyes) less-than-competent Tokyo Police Club, the dudes from Ireland put on a show that was second to none. Playing everything from their debut LP “Tourist History” - including a phenomenal show opener in “Cigarettes in the Theatre” - along with some lesser-known tunes, the band had the crowd (more or less) jumping up and down from start to finish. I don’t think the Paradise has seen that much pogo dancing since they re-opened their doors this past October.

This is another band that every other band in existence should take cues from. They actually enjoyed playing their instruments and put everything they had into making their set enjoyable for even the least initiated. Frontman Alex Trimble said at one point that their set that night was the best show they’ve ever played in Boston. Not that I’ve had the privilege of seeing them prior to this show, but I believe him. Every song, from start to finish, was flawless. When they were down to their final song “I Can Talk,” those who came chiefly for Two Door Cinema Club were singing the song’s opening sample long before the band even began to play. Everyone even got into the one new song they played. Any band that can get the same response out of unreleased music that they do out of their “popular” tunes must be doing something right. In the words of the band, “Cheers.”
