Concert Review: Young The Giant 1.18.11

This past Tuesday, we braved snow, rain, tsunami-grade waves on Comm. Ave and more rain and headed to The Great Scott to see recent iTunes favorite Young The Giant make good on the waves they’ve been making in the music scene. What we saw and heard upon arrival can’t be described in any language. However, we’ll try our best.

At first, I thought it was the weather that made the Young the Giant’s sunny SoCal pop stand out. However, after a few songs, I came to the realization that what really made these guys stand out, was that they not only possessed talent that far surpasses many bands out there, but they also enjoyed being on stage playing their tunes to a sold out crowd. In all actuality, it’s not all that hard to sell out The Great Scott. It’s a tiny bar on a corner that sells PBR tallboys by the bushel and basks in the glory of a whiskey shot served with a back of pickle juice. But when bands do sell out The Great Scott, the reason is evident. Tuesday’s show was a true “I saw them before they were famous” moment. Frontman Sameer Gadhia’s use of two vocal mics to enhance their overall sound complimented guitartists Jacob Tilley and Eric Cannata’s unique guitar lines. Having been the “iTunes Free Download” of the Week last week, I expected a bunch of unsuspecting music fans to crowd the already over-crowded venue. If anyone there was a part of this group, they were grossly outnumbered by dedicated fans who often sung louder than Gadhia could scream into his two mics.

Seeing bands at the beginning of a nationwide tour can often times carry with it a number of disadvantages that include, but isn’t limited to, technical difficulties, choppy arrangements and poorly planned set lists. Young had none of these disadvantages to combat and if they did, they masked it exceptionally well. It was clear to me that these guys had their game plan down pat. Definitely worth seeing again.
