Here it is cronies, the second installment of the Mid Summer Night’s Playlist series. While my orginal intention was to publish monthly lists, I listen to far too much music to create a motnhly cohesive list of a dozen or so tracks. Instead, I’ll publish them as I see fit, while categorizing them as necessary. This playlist dives deep into the world of mashups. Anyone who keeps up with the Record Crate’s flow knows that there’s a spot in my heart for mashups. While many people spent their last semester in college sweating out their senior theses and doing research, I wrote mine on Girl Talk and the Copyleft movement.
I subscribe to the idea that mashup music is what we’ll be listening to 15 years down the line in the mainstream. It’s not that I think that mashups have staying power by themselves (although I do), I say this only because there are only so many ways artists can combine musical notes, beats, tempos, styles, etc. to create original works of art. I feel like most of the world’s greatest music has already been made and it’s the responsibility of today’s artists to pay homage to these songs by combining them wit like-minded pieces of art. Listen to my playlist on Last.fm and decide for yourself. Here’s the track listing
Girl Talk - Play Your Part (Part 1)
The Illuminoids - Teenage Electric Lobotomy
Super Mash Bros. - Livin The Dream (I’m on a Float)
Justice - One Minute To Midnight
Easter Egg - Private Parts
E-603 - Lights Out
Super Mash Bros. - From Honor Roll To Out Of Control
E-603 - Crunk Colony
Girl Talk - Play Your Part (Part 2)
