Certified Gold 2009 - Unsigned Act of the Year
The Downbeat Keys have this one in the bag. Never heard of them? Read my post about them here. A couple things worth noting about this band. First and foremost, bass player Andrew Root is sporting JAQK in the picture above. Second, their rhythm section is tighter than … you can finish that sentence. Lastly, their music makes you wanna shake what cha mamma gave ya, you dig? Check out...

Certified Gold 2009 - Boston Band of the Year
This one goes without saying I don’t really know what there is to say about this band beyond what I’ve been saying all along. I can’t say enough how awesome it is that their EP (Chunk of Change) started out as the lead singer’s Valentines Day gift to his ex dime piece.

Certified Gold 2009 - Best Unorthodox Concert...
This one goes to  … Bon Iver Live at the Hollywood Cemetary! Justin Vernon might not ever get the distinction of being a man of few words (or projects). Though his latest, and arguably most popular effort to date, is on hiatus he’s left an indelible mark on the concert venue concept. In September, Vernon created a dream-like experience at the gates of the Hollywood...

Certified Gold 2009 - Most Disappointing Side...
Maybe creating an album with hand claps entirely replacing snare hits was a better idea on paper? The recent collab between members of Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot, in my humble opinion, was nothing more than just a flash in the pan. I thought it was a little ironic that their album, complete with a cover of the Jackson classic “I Want You Back” was released right around the...

Certified Gold 2009 - Best Song With A Video Only...
Armand Van Helden & A-Trak present: Duck Sauce I’m not even going to lie. I’m a huge fan of this video. They picked up where Outkast left off in their “Hey Ya” video. Sure Andre 3000 didn’t cover all of the roles in this one, but the whole mantra surrounding the video-the setup to the performance evokes a true 1970s era late night TV special. and What...

Certified Gold 2009 - Best Band From Paris With a...
The Record Crate has given the Certified Gold: Best Band From Paris With a Song in a Commercial Award to Phoenix! When I got this album, I thought about immediately erasing the song 1901, due to its cameo appearance in that car commercial. Much to my surprise, that song is amazing when played in its intended form. That whole album from start to finish is amazing. I feel like the album,...

Certified Gold - The Best (and Worst) of 2009
Over the next several days, The Record Crate will unveil it’s Certified Gold list. What is this “Certified Gold” list you may ask? It’s honestly just another way for us to coin a quintessential “Best and Worst of” list for 2009. Though some of the categories will ring similar to the typical run of the mill lists, we thought it would be in true TRC fashion to...

Concert Review - WFNX's Miracle on Tremont Street
When I first saw this holiday show advertised, I two things came to mind: FNX puts on the best radio shows of all time, though they seem to have terrible reception just about everywhere Passion Pit, Phoenix AND Spoon on the same bill? I’m there At first I was surprised at how the line up went on stage. They put Passion Pit first? The hometown band is playing FIRST? That’s like...

They're Playing Our Song
I’ve decided that the only thing anyone can rely on anymore is music. Think about it. Those cheesy family moments when your parents would get nostalgic…it wasn’t because of that stanky perfume your Mom bought your Dad that got regifted secretly in an office yankee swap. When our parents were young, they had “songs.” This isn’t me saying that the music industry...
